Revolutionizing School Libraries: Lishin Elementary School Library

Shian-gung Tsai's Innovative Design Wins Golden A' Design Award

Shian-gung Tsai's unique design for the Lishin Elementary School Library in Taiwan has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award. The design, inspired by the concept of reading under a tree, has transformed the traditional school library space into an inviting, engaging environment.

The design process was a chance to revolutionize the reading space in Taiwanese schools. Tsai and his team decided to move away from the typical colorful images and icons, opting instead for plywood. The wood frame book wall curves onto the ceiling, creating the impression of a space under a tree. The pebble shelves, likened to a knowledge river, guide the students into the book world.

The library's integration into the school was a challenge for the school reading team, consisting of teachers. Tsai proposed a separated space concept for the school. The entry space was transformed into a charming reading area, welcoming students with wood-framed shelves creating a book wall and pebble. The design also connected three classrooms with different functions and transformed the original teacher office into a reading corner.

The project was realized using arouca plywood frames, forming the wall to the ceiling. The team used CNC cutting to shape the form of the pebble rock shelves, which were then shipped to the library for setup. The library consists of three collaborative classrooms, covering a total area of 450m2.

Before designing the library, Tsai and his team spent a considerable amount of time observing students in the library. They collected data on reading behaviors to inform their design decisions. One of the most significant challenges was persuading teachers, who typically prefer colorful public spaces for children. The team had to overcome these preferences during the design process and after completion.

The library primarily serves the students in the school and is managed by Compassion mothers. The students enjoy the library, feeling free in the space. The project started in November 2017 in Taichung and was completed in February 2018. The design has received the Golden A' Design Award, granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom.

The Lishin Elementary School Library is a testament to the power of innovative design in transforming traditional spaces. Shian-gung Tsai's design has not only changed the reading space in Taiwan's schools but has also given the school a better image. The award-winning design is a shining example of how art, design, and innovation can significantly impact the world of education.
